When a patient misinterprets information, the most effective approach is to use plain, simple language, restate the message in different words, and confirm understanding through teach-back. Plain language makes the key points clear and reduces barriers caused by medical jargon. Paraphrasing ensures you’ve captured what the patient believes, not just repeating the same terms. Teach-back asks the patient to explain the information in their own words or demonstrate how they would act on it; if they can do this accurately, understanding is confirmed; if not, you can target the specific gaps and clarify again. This method promotes safety, informed decision-making, and patient engagement.

Repeating information louder is not helpful and can feel patronizing. Relying on medical terminology alone excludes the patient from the conversation. Ignoring the misunderstanding neglects the nurse’s responsibility to ensure the patient accurately understands their care.
